About the translator
Professor Nashid Kamal was educated at the University of Dhaka, Carleton University, Canada and London University, UK where she took a PhD in `Medical Demography’. She worked as a visiting scholar in the Universities of Penn State (USA), Southern Illinois (USA) and University College London (UK). Since 1986 Nashid Kamal has taught statistics and demography in Dhaka University, Independent University and North South University with her main research work on fertility decline in developing countries.
Nashid Kamal is the eldest daughter of former Chief Justice Mustafa Kamal and Professor Husne Ara Kamal and granddaughter of the legendary singer Abbasuddin Ahmed, who was a very close friend of Kazi Nazrul Islam. Nashid is an expert exponent of Nazrul Islam’s songs , writer, presenter for Bangladesh TV channels and a cultural Ambassador since her tender ages. For last twenty years, she has published several books both in Bangla and English. Her translations of Nazrul Islam’s songs in two volumes titled `Return of Laili’ has gained international attention. Her other books from Nazrul Institute include the translation of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s book of ballads in `Chokrobak’ and his biography (original by Professor Rafiqul Islam). This book marks her fifth publication of Nazrul’s works.
